The study investigator received fully informed written consent and parents were administered a pilot tested, self-fi lled questionnaire. The questionnaire was test piloted among medical staff. SPSS was used for the descriptive analysis of data ( http:// www.spss.com/ ). Sixty questionnaires were distributed and 52 parents returned the questionnaire, with a response rate of 86%. All respondents were females, with a mean age of 33 (SD ±6) years. Thirty-two respondents (62%) had never travelled with a child less than 2 years of age in the previous 2 years. Of the 52 respondents, only 6 (11.5%) had heard about CRDs for air travel but none had used one. Forty-three (84%) parents believed that a CRD is important for infant safety and 48 (92%) were willing to purchase a separate seat for a CRD. Thirty-two (66%) were willing to pay up to 50% of the cost of an adult seat for CRD use. Knowledge of CRD and safety related to infant safety during air travel is very limited. Further parent education by both airlines and healthcare professionals is required to increase awareness of infant safety issues during air travel and to implement policies to improve infant outcomes following turbulence and survivable crashes.

Prevention of Infant’S Otic Barotrauma – Observing the Infant Prior to Air Travel and Identifying Infants Less Likely At Risk

Otic barotrauma is a potential risk for travelers using commercial aircraft. A significant proportion of passengers are infants. No literature exists regarding pre-flight assessment for prevention of barotrauma in infants due to air travel. Infants are preverbal in their development and cannot communicate their distress with words, though will show age-typical distress and pain responses. Pain ...

Fitness to fly and altitude physiology in young infants

Air travel is so popular that it is estimated that over four million passengers travel on commercial fights every day. Parents who wish to travel with their babies seek advice about whether this is safe and how old the baby must be before they can fly. The reduction in cabin pressure of a commercial aircraft in flight is equivalent to 1530-3440 metres altitude. As the altitude increases the par...

Evaluating hypoxia during air travel in healthy infants.

Up to a third of ex-preterm infants flying near term exhibit pulse oxygen saturation (SpO2) of less than 85% during air travel. A hypoxia challenge test (HCT) is recommended to evaluate the requirement for in-flight supplemental O2. The validity of the HCT in healthy, term infants has not been reported. This study aimed to characterise the in-flight hypoxia response and the accuracy of the HCT ...
